Current Live Edge Slab Inventory

Thanks for checking out our current inventory of hardwood slabs and lumber! We have more inventory than is shown here so if you are local to the Louisville, KY area please plan to stop by and check everything out!  New slabs are added frequently so please check back often.  All slabs are air dried to preserve the beauty of the natural wood grain, and to minimize any warping or cracks. The mill date is noted on each board and drying time is impacted by board thickness and species. A good rule of thumb to consider a slab completely dry is to allow one year of drying time per inch of thickness. If desired, we can run a slab through a sterilizing kiln cycle according to USDA standards for a nominal fee.

If you see something you like, would like to purchase any of the slabs that you see or have any questions please send us a message or use the Contact Us button above, and remember to include the slab ID in your message.

In some cases, absolutely yes you can. If you have a nice log that is a species I'm looking for in some cases we will mill it at no cost if we can share the lumber with you!

YES!  Our inventory is always changing and we are always looking for new logs to mill. We try to keep the website up to date, but in the time you spent reading this we may have just picked up your perfect log! So please feel free to contact us to see what might have just come in and check back often.

No! That is a very specialized skill that needs an expert in the field to do because of the dangerous nature involved. What I can do in most cases is save you a lot of money by coming and getting the downed tree to give it a second life instead of the tree company cutting it up and hauling it away.

Typically the bulk of our inventory is air dried because of the sheer volume.  We also air dry all of our slabs to preserve the beautiful natural wood grain and to minimize the risk of warping or cracks. We do have a small kiln dryer as well and at your request, we can put any slabs you wish to purchase through a kiln cycle that further reduces the moisture content and/or additionally run it through a heat cycle that sterilizes per USDA standards (heating to 133° throughout the wood).  Please note, we only operate our kiln at certain times of the year (late spring through early fall).  This is the only time we would offer to add a customers board to the run cycle for an additional fee.  We do have some kiln dried slabs available, but the selection would be far reduced from what is available in the bulk air dried inventory, please let us know if you require kiln dried wood.

Wood is a living, breathing material which means insects are always a possibility with with any wood, including air dried slabs. Even kiln dried lumber could possibly have them due to a re-infestation or possibly a hardier insect making it through a heat cycle. You the customer have to decide what you are comfortable with concerning the wood you purchase. The possibility can be minimized however. The first thing we do to all our slabs as soon as they come off our mill is spray them with a Borax solution. Borax is a natural pesticide and fungicide that protects wood from wood-boring beetles, termites, carpenter ants, and wood rot. When wood-destroying pests ingest the borate-treated wood, it inhibits their ability to extract nutrients, causing them to starve and thus ending their life cycle if present. It also creates a barrier that pests cannot cross. The other way to minimize the possibility is by putting the air dried slabs through a sterilizing kiln cycle per USDA standards (heating to 133° throughout the wood).  While there is never a perfect 100% guarantee, these are the traditional methods to minimize the possibility. Similarly, there may be evidence of these things in some slabs, such as holes or ambrosia coloring or spalting. Many consider these traits beautiful and highly desirable.

It varies from slab to slab and depends on the mill date, which is noted on each piece. While we do not guarantee a certain moisture content, a good rule of thumb is to allow one year for each inch of thickness to ensure drying completion although typically it is much faster when stored in a building. As a prospective buyer you are encouraged to bring a moisture meter if you are looking for a specific moisture content or we can run a kiln cycle for you for a nominal fee.

Generally speaking we don't surface plane any slabs. It comes off the mill in what's called "rough sawn" state, but if it is not too large we may be able to help with that, just ask. As far as custom cutting, yes we can accommodate that just let us know what size you are looking for.

We do sell firewood but typically only business to business sales at this point. If you are a business that retails firewood bundles, please contact us for pricing and availability.
